Italian Construction Sector Transitions to Digital Waste Registration System Rentri

Wednesday 30 april 2025

The Italian construction sector is undergoing a phased implementation of Rentri, a new National Electronic Register for Waste Tracking. This digital system, based on recent legislative changes, aims to achieve more efficient and transparent waste management within the sector, aligning with European sustainability goals.

Rentri introduces new digital formats for waste documentation, including the Waste Identification Form (FIR) and the Loading and Unloading Register, which will be fully digital by February 2026. Certain companies, including producers of hazardous waste and larger enterprises generating non-hazardous waste, are obligated to register. Smaller construction companies producing exclusively non-hazardous demolition waste and own-account carriers are currently exempt.

Registration is being rolled out in phases, depending on company size. Large companies were required to register earlier, while medium-sized companies must do so by late 2025/early 2026. Following registration, digital management of the Loading and Unloading Register is mandatory, with monthly data transfers.

The National Association of Building Contractors (Ance) has published guidance to support the sector through this transition. BigMat emphasises the importance of this digitisation for a more sustainable future in construction.
